Patriots Draft/Off-Season Needs Look Ahead

 Urgent Needs

DE/EDGE

Harold Landry and K'Lavon Chaisson have been good, not great. Chaisson is a free agent. Will they bring him back? Even if yes, they still need more speed off the edge.

I see them making an offer to Jaelan Phillips in free agency.

S

Only Craig Woodson, Dell Pettus, and Brendan Schooler are under contract for 2026. I expect the team to try to re-sign Jaylinn Hawkins and address the position in the draft.

LG

I designate this a high need because I assume the team wants to move Jared Wilson to C, which might not be true. If they want to keep Wilson at LG, I believe they will target C on day 2 of the draft.

They could pursue Joel Bitonio in free agency and then use draft picks at other positions.

Medium Needs

TE

Austin Hooper is a free agent. They need to bring him back and/or draft a TE. In this case, I prefer they use the draft and get youth at the position.

G Depth

I expect them to fill this need by tendering Ben Brown.

DT

Please re-sign Khiyiris Tonga.

LB

Jack Gibbens is a free agent and I want to upgrade in any case. I am looking for them to pursue Devin Bush in free agency. If not, I would love to draft Jacob Rodriguez from Texas Tech.

CB depth

They can tender Alex Austin to take pressure off the need to draft CB, and still draft CB on day 3.

S Depth

I see the team double-dipping at S by signing a free agent (or re-signing Hawkins) and drafting S on day 3.

2026 Roster Needs Look Ahead

QB--no urgent needs; we can't see practices and thus have no idea about the worth of tendering RFA Tommy DeVito RB--no urgent needs; Gibson will be back from injury and Henderson is catching on; probably sign a low-cost veteran as Gibson insurance and maybe use one of many 6th round picks at this position WR--unpopular opinion: no urgent needs here; Diggs has solidified the position and Hollins is delivering above expectations so why risk the vibes? I don't see any free agent signings here and only draft WR if a draft day fluke leaves a player on the board who shouldn't still be on the board TE--URGENT. Must re-sign Hooper or find another free agent to replace. Use draft capital here too: Joe Royer, Justin Joly are good mid-round options T--some need; maybe sign a low-cost vet, definitely use a mid- or late-round pick on LT to replace Lowe and RT as Moses insurance G/IOL--stealth high need; drafting a great LG means you can move Wilson to C and cut Bradbury DL--medium need;...
